We recycle over 1,000 items of furniture each week for our clients.
It costs approximately the same to recycle an item of furniture as it does to simply dispose of it. That’s because the process of recycling is very labour intensive, however as waste disposal costs rise and our duty to look after the environment increases, organisations are put under ever increasing pressure to be responsible about how they dispose of their unwanted furniture.
Each different type of board (Melamine Faced Chipboard, Medium Density Fiberboard or pure timber), is recycled in several different ways.
All of the Wood is then loaded in to large, purpose bought Bio-Mass Boilers used to heat our Factories around the UK.
Metal in the furniture is separated from the other materials using handheld power tools. The main two metals used in office furniture are Aluminium and Steel, both of these metals can be recycled many times, and so it’s very important that none are thrown to landfill.
Office furniture will usually be of the following polymers: PVC, Polypropylene, Polystyrene, Nylon and Polyurethane.
All the different plastics are removed from the furniture, their polymer identified and then segregated accordingly.
All hard plastics are granulated and turned into plastics granules or pellets. These granules can then be extruded into a variety of new products, including components for new office furniture.
WHEN THERES WASTE THERE'S A WAY.
Waste packaging is a huge cost to the furniture industry. Throwing materials away not only costs you money but also adds to the landfill shortage in the UK and wastes valuable resources that should be recycled.
Waste Packaging Regulations legislation states that companies have a Duty of Care to recycle defined amounts of their packaging.
The necessary thresholds keep decreasing, so even if you are not legally required to recycle now, you probably will do in the future, and the sooner you start the more money you’ll save.
Sustain offers a packaging recycling service which will reduce your waste costs, ensure that your packaging is recycled effectively and responsibly, whilst also keeping you legally compliant with waste regulations and legislation.
How the service works
Issuing specially commissioned recycling bags, once filled with all of your packaging, The Senator Group will collect whilst delivering furniture to your warehouse, or on a returning journey. Ensuring your carbon footprint is kept to a minimum.
The recycling bags cost £2.75 each, and are sold in batches of 50, so £125 + VAT each order. These pre-paid bags can be used as quickly or as slowly as you want or need; simply re-order some more when you’ve nearly run out.

Each year, Sustain will provide you with a recycling certificate showing the total tonnage of packaging you’ve recycled, and how much carbon you have saved. This can be a great sales and marketing tool, which is fully auditable and can be used on tenders.
Equivalent costs and expected savings
The recycling bags have a volume of 1 cubic metre (or 1.3 cubic yards) in volume. This makes it very easy to do a cost comparison against skips.
